Introduction:
Throughout history, there have been extraordinary individuals who have been blessed with divine revelations and knowledge. One such remarkable figure is Lady Fatima (PBUH), the beloved daughter of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and his beloved wife, Lady Khadijah (S). Lady Fatima holds a prominent, esteemed and unique position within the Islamic faith and history, not only as the wife of Imam Ali (PBUH) and the mother of Imam Hassan and Imam Hussain (peace be upon Them), but also as she is recognized as a remarkable Muhadditha, a woman with whom Angels spoke and brought messages from Allah. In this article, we delve into the role played by Lady Fatima (PBUH) as a Muhadditha and her invaluable contributions to the Islamic tradition through the revelations she received from the Angel Gabriel.
Exceptional women in history:
It is worthy to mention that conversations between angels and individuals who are not divine prophets are uncommon and rare. However, there have been four exceptional women throughout history with whom the angels conversed: Maryam, the mother of Jesus (AS); the spouse of Imran, the mother of Moses (AS); Sarah, the mother of Isaac and Jacob (AS); and Fatimah Zahra (s), the daughter of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). Throughout the entire history, only these 4 remarkable women were blessed with such extraordinary encounters. The divine interaction between angels and these extraordinary women highlights their great status in Islamic history.
The Sahifa of Fatima (PBUH):
In the same vein as Lady Maryam and the mother of Moses, Lady Fatima was bestowed with the honor of receiving revelations from Allah through the awe-inspiring presence of the Angel Gabriel, similar to her father, Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). These divine revelations were compiled in a book known as the Sahifa of Fatima (PBUH) / Mushaf of Fatima (PBUH). This sacred book is exclusive to the infallible Imams and is not accessible to the general public and is said to contain a wealth of knowledge and insights regarding the position of the Prophet (PBUH) in Paradise, as well as prophecies and future events. Lady Fatima’s ability to receive this sacred knowledge from the Angel Jibril showcases her exceptional spiritual prowess and the profound love and respect that Allah Almighty had for her.
Shia Imams Clarify: Mushaf of Fatimah is Not the Quran!?
It is worth noting that there have been misconceptions among some Sunni scholars regarding the Mushaf of Fatimah. Some have claimed that Shias alternative Quran called the Mushaf Fatima, but this belief is unfounded. It is crucial to note that Shia Imams have consistently emphasized that this book is separate from the Quran, and Shias accept the same Quran that is universally accepted by all Muslims.
Exploring the Contents of Mushaf Fatima (PBUH):
According to narrations, the Mushaf Fatima (PBUH) is not primarily composed of the Quran or religious laws. Instead, it reveals knowledge of the past, present and future events. The infallible Imam (PBUH) clarified that the Mushaf Fatima (PBUH) does not include the Quran but is written in a book with two volumes of Zabarjad (a precious stone) on pages made from white jewels. It encompasses accounts of past and future events until the Day of Judgment. It contains information about the heavens, angels, their count and names, and the created and non-created beings. It also includes the names of believers and deniers until the Day of Judgment, descriptions of eastern and western cities, the count of believers and deniers, and the characteristics of every denier throughout history and their reigns in each period.
The Role of Imam Ali (PBUH):
As a Muhadditha, Lady Fatima (PBUH) had the great privilege of conveying these revelations to her husband, Imam Ali (PBUH), who in turn meticulously documented them.
Imam Ali (PBUH), who possessed unparalleled knowledge and wisdom, played a crucial role in preserving revelations of Lady Fatima (PBUH). As the designated guardian of divine knowledge and wisdom, Imam Ali (PBUH) ensured that the revelations received by Lady Fatima (PBUH) were accurately transcribed. His dedication to preserving these teachings allowed subsequent infallible Imams to have access to the secret knowledge contained within the Sahifa of Fatima (PBUH).
The Legacy of Lady Fatima (PBUH) as a Muhadditha:
Moreover, Lady Fatima’s position as a Muhadditha serves as a beacon of empowerment and leadership for women in the contemporary world. Her ability to receive revelations from the Angel Gabriel demonstrates her unique and special status before Allah (swt) and that women can possess immense spiritual capacity and should be recognized for their valuable contributions to society, both in the past and present.
From Mother to Son: Preserving the Sahifa of Fatima, A Sacred Duty of the Imams
The Mus’haf Fatimah is highly revered among Shia Muslims and has been passed down from one Imam to the next. The responsibility of preserving the Sahifa of Fatima (s) after Imam Ali (PBUH) was inherited by Imam Hassan (PBUH), the son of Imam Ali, then by His brother Imam Hussain (PBUH), and then by Imam Sajjad (PBUH), the son of Imam Hussain (PBUH). Imam Sajjad (PBUH) passed it on to His son, Imam Muhammad al-Baqir (PBUH) who later passed it on to his son Imam Ja’far al-Sadiq (PBUH), Imam Musa al-Kadhim (PBUH), to His son Imam Ali al-Ridha (PBUH), followed by His son, Imam Jawad (PBUH), His son ImamAli al-Hadi (PBUH), His son Imam Hasan al-Askari (PBUH), and now it is currently in the possession of the Twelfth and final Imam, Imam Mahdi (aj), who is the son of Imam Askari (PBUH). Imam Mahdi (aj) is The Promised Saviour and is currently in occultation until his reappearance at Apocalypse (the end of time). Owning this book is considered a sign of the Imamate.
Abu Basir’s inquiry on the book Mushaf of Fatimah (PBUH):
Abu Basir asked Imam Baqir (peace be upon him) about the Quran of Fatima (peace be upon her). The Imam said, “After the Prophet Muhammad(peace be upon him and his family) passed away, Allah revealed this book to Fatima (peace be upon her). The Quran is not in it. It is made of two covers of yellow peridot, and its pages are made of white jewel. It contains information about the past and the future until the Day of Judgment. It includes news about the heavens, the angels, their number, and others. It also includes the number and names of both the sent and unsent creatures, and those who have been sent towards them. The names of those who deny them and those who believe in them are included. The names of all believers and disbelievers until the Day of Judgment are recorded in it. It also describes the cities of the east and the west and the number of believers and disbelievers and the characteristics of each denier. It mentions the deeds of those who have passed and the tyrants who have come to power, and their duration of rule in all eras. The qualities and number of the people of Paradise and their names, as well as the people of Hell, are also mentioned in it. The knowledge of the Quran, the Torah, the Gospel, and the Psalms, as they were revealed, is also in it.
When Allah wanted to reveal it to Fatima (peace be upon her), He assigned Gabriel, Michael, and Israfil to this task. It occurred on Friday night while Fatima (peace be upon her) was performing her prayer. After she completed her prayer, they greeted her and said, “Peace be upon you. Allah sends his peace to you.” They placed the Quran on her lap. She responded, “Peace is exclusive to Allah, and comes from Him, and returns to Him. And peace be upon you, O messengers of Allah.” Then the angels ascended to the heavens, and after the morning prayer, Fatima (peace be upon her) was occupied with reciting the Quran until she reached its end. Indeed, obedience to Fatima (peace be upon her) is obligatory for all creations, including jinn, humans, animals, prophets, and angels.
Afterwards, this Quran was passed to Imam Ali (peace be upon him), then to Imam Hasan (peace be upon him), then to Imam Hussein (peace be upon him), and finally it reached us. Abu Basir said, “This knowledge is extensive.” The Imam (peace be upon him) replied, “All of these matters are from the first sections, and nothing is mentioned in the second sections.”
Conclusion
In conclusion, Lady Fatima (PBUT) holds a unique and esteemed position within the Islamic faith and history as a Muhadditha. Her divine revelations and conversations with the Angel Gabriel showcase her exceptional spiritual prowess and the profound love and respect that Allah Almighty had for her. The Sahifa of Fatima (PBUT), also known as the Mushaf of Fatima (PBUT), contains invaluable knowledge and insights regarding the position of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) in Paradise and future events. While misconceptions may arise among scholars, it is important to clarify that this book is not a new Quran for Shias, as Shia Imams have consistently emphasized. The Mushaf Fatima (PBUT) offers a glimpse into the past, present, and future events, encompassing information about the heavens, angels, believers, and deniers until the Day of Judgment. The role of Imam Ali (PBUT) in meticulously documenting these revelations underscores the significance and relevance of Lady Fatima’s role as a Muhadditha. Her contributions serve as a testament to her exceptional position in Islamic history and her profound spiritual connection with the divine.
In conclusion, the extraordinary life and legacy of Lady Fatima (PBUH) illustrates the immense spiritual capacity and wisdom that can be attained by righteous individuals, regardless of gender. As the beloved daughter of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), Lady Fatima was blessed with divine revelations and honoured with visits from the Angel Gabriel himself to convey sacred knowledge and prophecies. The compilation of these revelations in the sacred text Mus’haf Fatima serves as a testament to her spiritual stature and proximity to the Divine.
Moreover, Lady Fatima’s critical role as a Muhadditha exemplifies how women can play instrumental roles in preserving and conveying sacred knowledge. Her character dismantles outdated patriarchal notions that attempt to limit women’s spiritual capabilities. Lady Fatima stands tall among the greatest spiritual luminaries of Islamic history – as one of the few who had the honour of receiving direct revelations from Allah through Angel Gabriel.
Additionally, the great care and meticulous detail with which her husband Imam Ali (PBUH) preserved her narrations highlights how men and women can work cooperatively to safeguard divine wisdom. The fact that the Mushaf Fatima contains invaluable insights about past and future events until Judgement Day further cements its status as a sacred text that only the Divinely Guided Imams have access to.
As the Mushaf Fatima continues to be zealously safeguarded and passed down from one Infallible Imam to the next, Lady Fatima’s legacy remains alive. Her character serves as inspiration for contemporary Muslim women across the globe, proving that Islamic spirituality has no gender. If a woman, at the mere age of 18, could achieve such spiritual greatness in 7th century Arabia, she serves as an exceptional role model for girls today to emulate her piety, wisdom, and unwavering dedication to the faith.
